Is early kidney failure hereditary in dogs?

a friends dog had to be put down due to kidney failure, he was maybe 6 or 7 yrs old ,pure blooded safforshire(sp?). terrier. I know one of hi/s brothers from same litter,is he in danger of the same fate .just because of his being of same litter ?
