Is there racism within races?

I am from a South Asian background and what you just described also occurs in our race. People who are lighter skinned South Asians feel "superior" to people who have a darker shade. Why? I wish I knew. Lighter skin is thought of as coming from a higher caste. They think that they are the descendants of the Aryan tribe thought to be from Indo-Iranian ancestors.
